Dolomites Snow Festival

Only barbed wire, saws and shovels are the tools that the participants in the 22nd International Festival of Snow Sculpture can use.

And the results are fantastic works of art made of frozen snow. Thirty artists from around the world are participating at this special event in San Candido from 11th to 13th and in San Vigilio di Marebbe from 16th to 18th January 2012.

Come to South Tyrol to spend a romantic holiday and enjoy these great snow sculptures that are illuminated at night especially!

Christmas bakery

The air smells of cinnamon and tea and the people of South Tyrol love prepare Christmas cookies.

We reveal a delicious recipe to make at home:

Coconut kisses (50 pieces)
(taken from the book “Dolci Dolomiti”)

Ingredients:
4 egg whites
200 g of powdered sugar
1 sachet of vanilla sugar
1 pinch of salt
200 g of flaked coconut
50 wafer

Preparation:
Whisk the egg whites with the salt, the powdered and the vanilla sugar. Stir in the coconut flakes. With a spoon form small mounds and place on waffles. Bake in oven at 120 degrees for 40 minutes.

Skicross on the Baranci in San Candido

At the beginning of the winter season, on 17th and 18th December 2011, the World Cup hosts San Candido. Full of adventure and spectacular will be the FIS Ski World Cup in the discipline of Skicross on the Haunold in Innichen.

Both, women and men, participate in competitions.
In addition, all fans of the sport and athletes are invited to the FIS World Cup Party Freesyle on Friday and Saturday from 5 pm in town center. Have fun!

Night skiing at the Mount Baranci

For the first time this year skiers can enjoy the evenings at the skiing mountain Baranci in San Candido. Twice a week you can ski on the ski slopes from 7 pm to 10 pm.

But even those who love sledding are invited to come. The 3 km long toboggan run in Innichen was equipped with a new lighting system. For night owls, the new Giant Baranci Refuge opens its doors.

The legend of the giant Haunold

In the days when the very famous Roman Collegiate Church was build, in the mountainous region around San Candido lived giants. So even the giant Haunold, who gave a hand to the people of San Candido to build this church bringing heavy stones. In exchange for the giant asked a calf, three bushels of beans and a barrel of wine every day.
When the church was completed, the giant continued to ask his food. But the inhabitants of San Candido did not want to feed Haunold, and set him a trap. The giant died there. But his spirit of the giant Haunold still runs around the mountain of San Candido, that also bears his name.

As a reminder of the giant Haunold in the Roman Collegiate Church of Innichen is hanging one of his ribs.

End of summer season at the Mount Haunold

The hiking paradise around the Monte Baranci in San Candido, the 4-seater chairlift and the first Funbob track in South Tyrol are a popular meeting place for young and old.

In the summer, especially the summer toboggan run and the large playground at the mountain station attracts many families. The chairlift will be open until 02/10/2011 from 09.00 to 17.15 (except on rainy days). On 2nd October 2011, to celebrate the end of the summer, chairlift runs are free all throughout the day.

Heugabel – farmer market and more

Until the 17th September 2011 takes place the “Heugabel – farmer market and more” in San Candido.

On 10th and 11th September there will be a farmers market with local products, farmers who prepare local dishes like Niggilan, tirtlan and Strauben and a group of about 20 artisans, including weavers, blacksmith and sculptors, who will present their artistic skills to visitors.

In the program there will be also outline trips to farms, cooking courses, excursions and the third edition of the scarecrow competition. Spend a long weekend in San Candido and experience the work of the farmers!
